EU Presidency welcomes statement on commuted death penalty sentences in Kenya
The Presidency of the European Union welcomes the announcement on 3 August by the President of Kenya, Mr Mwai Kibaki, that he has decided to commute all existing death sentences in Kenya into life sentences. The Presidency notes that no executions have been carried out in Kenya since 1987.
The Presidency considers that the abolition of capital punishment contributes to the enhancement of human dignity. The Presidency reaffirms the EU’s objective of working towards universal abolition of the death penalty and believes that formal abolition by Kenya would be an important step towards that aim.
