The EU Presidency expressed appreciation and full support for the efforts made by the AU Panel of Eminent African Personalities, under the leadership of H.E. Kofi Annan. The EU welcomed the importance that H.E. Kofi Annan is paying to Kenya and his dialogue with Government, Civil Society, Donor Community and others. The EU supports H.E. Kofi Annan’s call for progress in the implementation of the National Accord and Reconciliation Act (NARA). There is a window of opportunity for reforms that may close already next year as next cycle for elections starts.
H.E. Kofi Annan is in Kenya for a four day visit to follow up on the implementation of the NARA that was negotiated in February 2008 after the post-election violence broke out that left more than 1300 dead and 600 000 internally displaced.
